Adult Movement Classes in The Chevron Studio
Join us for a brand new series of FREE community 60-minute movement classes in The Chevron Studio at the Lyons NORDC Center.
No experience required; ages 18 – 80+ are welcomed. Classes are offered through May 28th.

Learn skills to help focus and calm your mind, improve physical and mental balance, increase core strength and strengthen organs, muscles and joints. Participants will experience the basics of tai chi and qigong, working with breath, energy, and simple meditative movements. Participants are encouraged to attend as many classes as possible to obtain the greatest benefit from the series.

Transform your mind, energize your body, open your heart and ignite your spirit! Come experience the joy and groove of yoga in a fun, welcoming environment.

Comfortable exercise attire is recommended for both classes. SHOES MUST BE REMOVED prior to entering The Chevron Studio. Yoga participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga or exercise mats, although mats are available to borrow on a first come, first served basis.

Senior Dance Fitness Classes
Free Expanded Senior Dance Fitness Program – Updated Schedule Announced!

Through extraordinary support provided by Chevron, Peoples Health, and the Greater New Orleans Foundation through the NORD Foundation. the NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance is proud to announce the recent expansion of its award-winning Senior Dance Fitness Program. Men and women ages 55+ are invited to join in for sessions to include stretching, cardio and dance, fun music, and healthy eating and lifestyle education. Other program features include performance opportunities, access to special master workshops, social events, and $5 tickets to select NOBA Main Stage presentations.

Participants must submit completed, signed enrollment & release forms before entering the studio space. Blank forms are available from the instructors or download here. Forms need only be filled out once and will be kept on file, but please note that each session is filled on a first come, first served basis (it is recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to class start time if possible). Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended (or specific attire details per class type). Only bare feet, socks, or ballet shoes are permitted on The Chevron Studio floor. Classes consist of Beginner/Intermediate Contemporary Ballet and Modern, Beginner Brazilian Dance, Intermediate/Advanced Horton Technique,and Beginner Haitian Kongo and Nago Folkloric Dance. See below for times, descriptions, and important dates.

Teen/Adult Beginner Brazilian Class
This class explores the fun rhythms and dances of Brazil and the many styles that represent its vibrant culture.

Beginner/Intermediate Contemporary Ballet and Modern
A multi-level class that incorporates elements of both classical ballet and modern dance. It allows for a greater range of movement and freedom for the dancer. The class not only focuses on basic technique and vocabulary, but also emphasizes proper alignment, strength, musicality, and artistry. Participants will be encouraged to push new boundaries and discover versatility, clarity and fluidity. No prior experience is required.

Intermediate/Advanced Horton Technique
The Lester Horton Technique is a rigorous and strength-building modern dance technique used by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York. The Intermediate/Advanced class will focus on fortifying basic Horton Technique skills including Primitive Squat Descent, Deep Forward Lunges, Flatbacks, Laterals, Release Swings, Hinges, Prances, Pulls, Triplets, Leg Swings, Tilts, Tables and Double Attitude Jumps. Experience recommended.

Beginner Haitian Kongo and Nago Folkloric Dance
The Basic Haitian Kongo and Nago Folkloric Dance class will focus on learning basic folkloric movements from two of the many nations/families in Haiti. The class will also occasionally include viewing video of the dances in their traditional contexts. A full skirt is recommended. No prior experience is required.
